Following extensive lobbying by Greg Hands MP, London Underground and Transport for London have agreed to increase peak hours capacity on the District Line’s Wimbledon branch.
Local residents who regularly use the branch, which serves local stations, Putney Bridge, Parsons Green and Fulham Broadway, will know how overcrowded the service can be, especially at rush hour.
The branch had been operating at 92% of capacity. From June 2006, an extra train has been put on the service during peak hours, which will come as a relief to long suffering passenger.
Commenting on the extra train, Greg said: “I am satisfied that this is a step in the right direction but I do not believe that one additional train will solve the problem. It is clear to me that one or two extra carriages need to be added to each Wimbledon to Edgware Road train in order to alleviate the over-crowding. The long-term solution to the problem is an overall increase in capacity on the whole District Line.”
Greg Hands MP has also secured a victory in getting more buses on the 211 route, which travels down Fulham Palace Road, through Fulham Broadway on its way to Central London.
